A device preventing thieves from siphoning diesel from fuel tanks has been installed by a raft of fleet operators, including Tesco and Sainsbury.
The TankSafe device from Tiss Security Systems fits inside the neck of an HGV fuel tank, allowing fuel to flow in but preventing thieves from siphoning it back out.
Tesco, which has fitted its entire fleet of lorries with the mechanism, was losing thousands of pounds every
month from thieves stealing diesel from trucks waiting at depots, said head of loss prevention, Barry Vincent. “The investment in TankSafe cost less than the amount of fuel being stolen from just one of our depots, so the business case was a no-brainer.”
Centura Foods transport manager Brian Tong said fitting the device had saved the company £2,500 a month in fuel costs.
Tiss had also developed slash-proof curtains for lorries and trailer alarms to alert drivers to unwanted passengers, according to commercial director Alex McCracken.
