With all this week's hullabalo surrounding Safeway, the Sainsbury-sponsored City Food Lecture on Tuesday, which this year was given by FSA chairman Sir John Krebs, could not have been better timed.
It was certainly the main topic of discussion among the audience, and even Sir John acknowledged the fuss. "I began to wonder on my way here whether I would be in the only person in the room who had not put in a bid for a supermarket chain this week," he told those who gathered in London's Guildhall.
The remark went down well with the audience, particularly with a certain Sir Peter Davis.
