Australian retailer Foodland Associated said interim sales had doubled on the back of its acquisition of New Zealand supermarket chain Woolworths.

Foodland MD Trevor Coates - who built Aldi's business in Britain - said it made 84% of its total first half earnings of A$123m before interest and tax in New Zealand. Group sales jumped to A$3.22bn.

The Aussie grocer said synergies from its 85-store Woolworths operation in NZ would rise this year to NZ$26m more than double its forecast of NZ$10m.
