Sainsbury's first forecourt Local c-store will be a test bed for developing the format. The store at a Shell garage in Roehampton, London, is the first of six planned for the M25 corridor in the next year. Local general manager Mark Rollmann said Sainsbury planned to experiment with the format: "By tweaking the format and learning from our mistakes, we will evolve by adapting." The 2,200 sq ft store is close to schools, a university, a hospital and a housing estate. It has a heavy fresh and own label emphasis, targeting grab and go and top up shoppers. And it features an off licence section. The store is trialling a mobile till which can be rolled out to the shop floor during peak periods. Sainsbury plans to install a second mobile till at the Wandsworth Road Local. The second Shell forecourt to take the Local format opens in Lewisham on November 24, and the third in Horley in the second week of December. Three more will be opened in the new year. Further expansion of the forecourt portfolio will be considered next August. Sainsbury has 13 high street Locals in operation. Initial plans for an aggressive roll out of 250 Locals have been dropped. {{NEWS }}
