Darren Blackhurst is set to return to front-line retailing after being lined up as the next chief executive of Matalan.

The former Asda chief merchandising officer walked out last May, when Andy Clarke was picked to succeed Andy Bond as chief executive. His role was subsequently filled by Charles Redfield.

Matalan is due to unveil Blackhurst (pictured) at the helm next month.

He will work alongside former Sainsbury’s head of general merchandising Adrian Mountford, who switched to Matalan in December.
