M&S, Sainsbury's, The Co-operative and Waitrose have all been shortlisted for the RSPCA's People's Choice supermarket award, in recognition of their animal welfare policies.

The four retailers made the shortlist after judges considered their policies on the treatment of cattle, chickens, pigs, sheep and farmed fish. Their records on live animal transport, stunning before slaughter, and foie gras and white veal sales were all studied.

The public have until 10 September to vote online. The winner will be announced at the RSPCA Good Business Awards ceremony on 6 October.
