Tesco has stepped up its assault on the US market after opening a brace of new Fresh & Easy stores in northern California.
The latest stores are the first in the northern half of the state, adding to around 160 outlets in southern California, Arizona and Nevada. As well as the two new outlets in the San Francisco Bay Area, the retailer plans to open another 10 in the northern half of California.
Tim Mason, the Fresh & Easy chief executive, called the openings “another significant step for our business”.
Sir Terry Leahy, who this week formally handed over the reins as chief executive to Philip Clarke, has predicted that Tesco’s US business will break even by 2013.
