A bank holiday weekend in Weston-super-Mare means it's all hands to the pump for staff at the local Asda, winner of this week's Top Store award.

The 50,000 sq ft store excelled in customer service, merchandising and availability during what is traditionally one of its busiest times of the year.

Sales typically soar by 10% over the summer months as holidaymakers flock to the popular seaside resort, with garden furniture, soft drinks and alcohol among the top sellers.

"Seasonal summer products are some of our bestselling lines but can also present the greatest challenges," said store manager Lee Williamson. "When the sun comes out we have a rush on lines such as salads, soft drinks, BBQ accessories and alcohol, so we have to make sure we have sufficient supplies in stock."

Asda was perfectly suited to the Somerset seaside resort, insisted Williamson, despite CACI data indicating that Tesco and Morrisons were more appropriate to the catchment area.

"The local people are looking for value as well as the extra services we offer such as the pharmacy and photo shop. We are extremely competitive on price and very aware of what our competitors are doing," he said. "We've seen more price changes in the past four to six weeks than we've ever seen and are consistently cheaper than our rivals."
