Asda has launched a fresh assault on the home furnishings market through its website.

It hopes the new online store will become a £500m-a-year business, and mount a serious challenge to traditional furniture sellers.

"By Easter we will treble the number of products available online, taking the total offer to more than 300 items," said Peter Pritchard, managing director of Asda's non-food business.

The George furniture range has been trialled in seven Asda Living stores and 26 Asda Supercentres. The range currently includes items such as leather sofas for £300.
