Spar UK aims to give its retailers a greater voice by making the vice chairman of the National Guild of Spar a salaried position for the first time.

The guild is the ultimate decision-making body for all operational and marketing matters. A Spar retailer was previously elected to hold the vice chairman's position for three years.

The new salaried role has been created to give more credence to the job, which is to champion the cause of the independent retailer.

"This signifies the importance of the democratic process within Spar, where retailers are key to decision-making," said guild chairman Martin Agnew.
