Supermarkets have reported a bumper Hallowe'en.

Tesco, which reckons Hallowe'en is worth £120m to retailers, said its overall sales were up 31%, with non-food up 28% and food sales, the bulk of which were in confectionery, up 21%.

By Tuesday 31 October, Sainsbury's had sold 450,000 carving and edible pumpkins, up 12% year-on-year. Costumes and props had also proved big business.

Morrisons said children's accessories, party products and confectionery had proved popular, and sales

of a Morrisons Hallowe'en cake had "exceeded all expectations".
