Wholesalers will need to adapt to survive the current economic climate, George Benson, president of the Scottish Wholesale Association, has warned.

Speaking at the trade association's annual conference at Crieff Hydro last week, Benson said wholesalers and suppliers should actively seek out opportunities rather than rein in plans for growth.

"The economic climate should create more opportunities for wholesalers and suppliers to the independent market," he said.

"We should be taking advantage of the fact that the average consumer has less cash, restricting spend in the multiples but giving a far bigger opportunity for top-ups in their local store. We can take advantage if we raise our game."

Benson added that last year was the first time Scotland's wholesale scene had seen "serious change" following Bestway's acquisition of Bellvue and Martex.
