Staff at Safeway's Hayes headquarters are hoping for Morrisons to win according to one senior buyer. He said workers behind the scenes believe a takeover by the northern-based chain would safeguard more jobs than a buy-out by Wal-Mart or Sainsbury.
"We believe Morrisons would need to keep more of us on to help them run the new business," he said. "It also makes sense from a company viewpoint because of the fit of stores."
He said the mood of staff remained "extremely buoyant".
A store manager said he would welcome any of the three bidders because they would provide him with a stronger offer.
