Henderson is spending £17m to upgrade its 72 Spar and Vivo stores "to make shopping easier and offer a wider choice".

The Northern Irish retailer plans to add butcher and Post Office concessions as well as cafés and food-to-go from The Streat franchise, which its parent company bought last year. It will also lease units to other businesses to attract more local shoppers.

The latest £17m matches the finance Henderson pumped into its own-store division in 2010.

"Whenever we redevelop a site we will ask what the community needs," a spokesman said.
