Sainsbury's: Announced initiative in September to put 500 products in compostable packaging. Reduced excess packaging for Easter eggs. Introduced recycled carrier bags. Linked up with Arts Council of England to provide reusable bags.



Asda: Redesigning all own label products over next 18 months to reduce weight and volume of packaging by at least 10%. Zero waste to landfill from stores by 2010.



Morrisons: Evaluating packaging used on fresh food to replace plastic with cartonboard from sustainable materials. Consumer testing of RecycleNow messages on products.



Somerfield: Has fully degradable disposable carrier bags that degrade after 18 months. Recycles 60,000 tonnes of cardboard and 3,000 tonnes of plastic a year from its stores.



Waitrose: Reduced packaging waste by 15% in past 12 months. Weight of packaging per million sales in 2005 was 30% less than 2000. 50% of organic fruit and vegetables are packed using biodegradable and compostable material.
