Umbro signs 

Makin Former Asda commercial finance director Steve Makin, who served on the store's operating board from August 2004, has been appointed the new chief executive of sportswear company Umbro with immediate effect. He replaces Peter McGuigan, who has resigned after eight years to become CEO at private equity-backed business Americana, which owns the Bench and Hooch trademarks. 

Advisor for Scotland 

Hollis Smallman, president of the Scottish Midland Co-operative Society, has been made an advisory board member of Co-operative Development Scotland, which was set up by Scottish Enterprise in January to promote Scotland's co-operative sector. 

Honorary president 

Michael Broadbent has been appointed the first honorary president of the Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) from 1 August this year. His first role will be to preside over WSET's first graduation ceremony, to which all this year's diploma graduates will be invited. Broadbent has been president of the International Wine and Food Society for the past 21 years. 

CIAA finds successor CIAA 

Europe's umbrella organisation for the food and drink industry - has announced that Mella Frewen will become the next director general, succeeding Daniela Israelachwili. Her most recent role was as the director of government affairs for Monsanto, working on issues related to agricultural biotechnology, conventional agriculture and agri-chemistry. 

Marketing for Jones 

Former deputy chairman of Morrisons, and ex-chairman of Next, David Jones has been recruited as chairman of the independent marketing agency The Direct Marketing Group.
