Sainsbury has hit back at Ocado’s claim that it is bigger than the supermarket when it comes to online retailing.
Speaking to The Grocer earlier this month, Ocado chief financial officer Jason Gissing called on Sainsbury to provide audited weekly sales numbers that were higher than those achieved by Ocado. If the retailer did this, he promised to donate £10,000 to charity (The Grocer, November 5, p10).
Sainsbury boss Justin King said once Gissing had looked at Sainsbury’s order figures this week, he would have to admit defeat. He added: “Then, it would be nice if they did give that money to charity.”
Despite Sainsbury online operations still covering just 77% of the country, it said its weekly orders had gone up from 30,000 to 38,000 and its online out-of-stocks were now less than one in 20.
