The Transport and General Workers Union is pressing for Sainsbury to review its pay structure after staff were told that only those who had signed new contracts last year were eligible for a pay rise this year.
As part of a Rewarding Good Service contract set up last year, staff prepared to give up overtime premiums were given a lump sum plus an extra 2.5% pay rise on top of the basic 2.5% already on offer. Those who thought this was not in their interests kept their shift premiums and received the basic 2.5% increase.
This year, however, pay rises have only been offered to staff who signed the Rewarding Good Service contracts, while those wishing to sign up now will have to forfeit the shift premiums without getting a lump sum to compensate.
