Sainsbury has opened a £10m 50,000 sq ft new concept store at Sprucefield retail park, near Belfast. It is intended to be a blueprint for all outlets of a similar size that will be either reinvigorated or built from scratch in 2004.
Sprucefield incorporates lessons from stores at Hazel Grove, Manchester, Monks Cross, York, and Purley Way, Croydon. Features include plasma screens above checkouts and an internet café with a Sainsbury’s Bank hub. There is a special area allowing easy access for shoppers who just want to buy fresh produce and 6,000 sq ft of non-food.
Staff go through supplier-led training programmes.
