More than 100 Sainsbury store managers are facing the loss of their jobs or the prospect of demotion as part of a business review. One store manager told The Grocer the retailer had come up with a new specification for the role of store manager. He said about 100 who did not match it were being offered a half-day assessment, and if they did not pass it, they would be offered a lower grade job or a severance package. Sainsbury said: "We regularly review our competencies across the business and the current activity regarding store managers is one of these reviews. "The role of the store manager is of paramount importance to the business and the success of any store is very much dependent on the manager's capability. "Until this review is complete we are not in a position to comment further." The review appears to stem from Sainsbury's efforts to improve the quality of service offered in its stores. {{NEWS }}
