Sainsbury chief executive Justin King collected almost £5m less last year than he did during the previous term.

King took home £3.2m in total last year, including basic pay of £900,000 and a £520,000 bonus in addition to share options and other benefits.

The previous year he trousered around £8m as Sainsbury’s exceeded performance targets.

Details of King’s pay were made public yesterday in the supermarket’s latest annual report. It was also revealed that Darren Shapland, who quit the business last month, saw his pay fall from £1.4m to £1.2m
