Sainsbury's boss Justin King took home almost £8m in salary, bonus, benefits and shares last year.
In Sainsbury's annual report for the year to 20 March, released today, the supermarket revealed that its chief executive was paid £900,000 in basic salary in a package of bonuses and pension supplements worth £3.35m.
He also pocketed share options worth an additional £4.5m.
Finance director Darren Shapland earned £3m. His basic pay soared 59% to £1.54m, with share options adding £1.46m to the sum.
Last week it emerged that Sir Terry Leahy, chief executive of the UK’s largest supermarket, Tesco, took home around £5.2m during 2009 in salary and bonuses.
The Grocer last month named King as the second most powerful figure in UK grocery retail in its 2010 Power List, behind Sir Terry but ahead of Waitrose MD Mark Price and new Marks & Spencer chief Marc Bolland.
