Former Unilever president Manvinder Banga is to join Marks & Spencer as a non-executive director.

Banga spent 33 years at Unilever and was president of the global foods, home and personal care businesses and a member of the executive board.

He is currently an operating partner at private equity company Clayton Dubilier & Rice. He joins M&S on 1 September.

“I am looking forward to joining the board of Marks & Spencer and participating in the continued development of this iconic retailer,” he said.

M&S chairman Robert Swannell added: “Vindi brings a wealth of experience of global business and extensive consumer and brand knowledge. His insights will further support the board discussion on our strategy, set out by Marc Bolland in November 2010, to become an international multi-channel retailer.”
