Sir; The latest attempt to restore the fortunes of Marks and Spencer smacks of desperation. At a time when we see other big UK retail chains being encouraged to expand overseas, for M&S to axe their stores outside these shores seems faintly odd. But then, it's hard to imagine the UK high street scene without M&S, so I suppose we should wish Mr Vandevelde well in his efforts. But if he really wants to know what's wrong with his chain's trading fomula, he should talk to my mother. She reckons that the fashions currently on sale at her local M&S are similar to those she saw back in the fifties. And she didn't like those either! M Branson Derby {{LETTERS }}
