Midcounties Co-operative Society has launched a new awards scheme to recognise the achievements of its 245,000 members.

The Member of the Year Awards will honour unsung heroes who, by their community work, support for the environment or ethical trading, embody the ideals of the co-operative movement.

Gongs will be handed out for the Most Active Member of the Year, Green Member of the Year, Community Member of the Year, Ethical Member of the Year, Young Member of the Year and Colleague Member of the Year.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony on 7 July and will receive a “trip of a lifetime” to Africa.

TV naturalist Nick Baker, who is backing the awards, said: “I’m looking forward to meeting the finalists. I must admit I envy the winners and their opportunity to experience Africa, its people and its wildlife.

“I’m sure it will be a life-enhancing trip and a fitting way to recognise their achievements.”
