Top 50 indie Harry Tuffins has been acquired by Midcounties Co-operative Society for an undisclosed sum.

The society has snapped up all 10 stores in the Welsh Borders based family-owned chain. It was 23rd on The Grocer’s latest Top 50 rankings of independent grocery retailers, with sales of £68m and profits of £617,000 in the year to 31 January 2011.

“We have plans to significantly invest in the estate but customers and our new colleagues can rest assured we fully appreciate how much this unique group of stores are cherished by their local communities,” said Midcounties chief executive Ben Reid.

The Delves family, which founded and owned the chain, added: “We are confident that in Midcounties we have found someone who shares our values and understands these stores have a special place in the community, and they will continue that tradition.”
