Ben Reid, the long-serving CEO of Midcounties Co-operative Society, has been appointed OBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

Reid has been CEO of Midcounties Co-op since 1992 and was honoured for service to business and to the community in Walsall.

He has lived in Walsall since 1988 and is chair of the Walsall Hospitals NHS Trust. He was also chairman of the Walsall Regeneration Company for six years before stepping down at the end of 2009.

"When I first joined, West Midlands Co-op was something of an 'island' and I made it one of my key objectives to make sure the society is really engaged with the local community," he said.

Meanwhile, Peter Freeman, the chairman of the Competition Commission who oversaw the groceries market inquiry, received a CBE for public service.
