Midcounties Co-op has banished rubbish bins from its Oxford HQ as it bids to cut its energy use by 20% by 2010.

In its Bin the Bin initiative, more than 200 wastepaper bins have been replaced by six central recycling units.

The scheme will be rolled out across the society’s six trading outlets, including food, travel, pharmacy, funeral and childcare.

‘Energy and environment champions’ will also be appointed across stores to save energy and show staff and customers how to be more eco-friendly.

“All rubbish in our HQ must now be recycled, be it cans, bottles, paper, food or plastic,” said Mike Pickering, energy and environment manager.
