Full-year sales at Midlands Co-op, the UK's second-largest society, rose 6% to £848m in the year to 24 January, boosted by the local shopping trend.

"Despite recession, we have in fact outperformed last year's results and our budget," said general manager for retail Tony Carroll.

The society is currently rolling out The Co-operative branding across its estate, which had already "heralded excellent results" in refurbished stores, added Carroll.

Group trading profits rose 7% to a record £16.2m during the year.
