For the second week running, Morrisons has checked in the cheapest basket in our weekly shopping survey. Although it was a touch more than last week, the bill at its Oldham store came to £38.07  7p less than rival Tesco at Milngavie. Only Somerfield and Asda suffered from out of stocks this week. Somerfield at Plymstock had no bacon and the branch at St Neots no frozen chicken, while both Asda stores were still not stocking 10-packs of Birds Eye fish fingers. Both Morrisons and Asda went big on the specials this week, Morrisons offering 50% extra free on bacon and Asda offering the same deal on sausages. Morrisons was also promoting its Jacob's Creek wine as being duty free. Last week's price slashing at Safeway was not repeated at its Llanishen branch. However, the store did have the best apple buy with Braeburns at 29p/454g  10p-16p less than the others. Fresh produce came under the spotlight at Sainsbury, Whitley Bay, where our shopper said there was little or no country of origin on any of the veg. At the end of the first quarter of the millennium, the adjusted average total came to £39.21  a decrease of 81p compared with the previous quarter. {{GROCER 33 }}
