A new year but the same old out of stocks in The Grocer 33. The shopping was done on New Year's Eve amid frantic shelf refilling, but Morrisons managed to repeat its pre Christmas performance with the only full basket. This time both stores achieved this, but the branch at Killingworth, Tyne & Wear, had the edge on its north west counterpart with a bill of £37.86. This was 6p less than the store at Cheadle Heath, because of the best buy in apples. Here our shopper reported cluttered aisles but "very happy staff". Best buys this week included a 50% extra free offer on sausages at Safeway, Plymstock, and Asda at West Bridgford was selling Hovis wholemeal at 43p which was 2p less than before. Our Welsh shopper did well buying Cox's apples at Tesco for 10p/454g, but the effect was counteracted by onions being scanned wrongly which added 84p to the bill. On the drinks front, Jacob's Creek wine had gone up in Sainsbury and Somerfield by 50p, however the post Christmas price of Diet Coke had come down by up to 20p in Asda, Safeway and Tesco. The weekly adjusted average total basket price of £37.89 was just 3p more than the week before Christmas. {{GROCER 33 }}
