Morrisons said like-for-like sales including petrol have risen 8.4% for the first 14 weeks of its new financial year.

Ahead of its meeting with the Competition Commission tomorrow Morrisons said total sales were up 14.2%.

Excluding petrol, store sales rose 12.5% and by 6.9% on a like-for-like basis.

Morrisons said the sales increases were the result of increased customer numbers and a rise in transaction values.

Food sales rose 12.8% and by 7.1% like-for-like. Off licence sales were up 12.3% in total and 7.1% like-for-like.

Total home and leisure sales rose 9.7% and by 3.6% like-for-like.
