Morrisons has claimed its new superstore in Kidderminster, due to open this September, will be the country's greenest after it incorporated a raft of energy saving devices.

The store has been rated 'excellent' under the BREEAM environmental assessment of buildings system, for features such as solar panels on the roof to provide hot water and a lighting system that automatically turns off the lights when there is sufficient daylight or when areas of the building are unoccupied.

"No other supermarket has ever achieved such a high environmental standard," claimed Chris Evenson, development director at Morrisons. "We have taken into account everything from energy management and insulation to construction methods and materials, new cycle ways and care of the local otter colony."
