Morrisons is to run a 700-acre farm in Scotland to research farming efficiency and sustainability.

It will work at the Dumfries House Trust site in East Ayrshire with the Scottish Agricultural College and share the findings with the rest of the industry.

The farm will rear traditional cattle and sheep. Its first shorthorn and Angus cattle will arrive later this year. Research projects will focus on animal feeding, housing and welfare.

Morrisons was seeking to establish a similar venture in southeast England, said chief executive Marc Bolland.
