Asda and Safeway have cut the cost of their fuel as Britons gear up for Bank Holiday destinations.

Asda has today knocked 1p per litre off its pump prices to bring the average cost of a litre of unleaded fuel down to 72p and its diesel to 74.1p.

Safeway is offering discounts of more than 50% when customers spend money on groceries in-store and range from 4p a litre for the first £10 spent to 40p a litre for £150 or more.

Safeway charges 72.9p for its unleaded petrol and 74.9p for diesel.
