Asda and Sainsbury's look poised to develop own label halal ranges.
Representatives from the retailers are due to visit the International Halal Food Trade Show in Paris this spring - and have already set up meetings with suppliers there.
Europe's first national halal standard will be launched at the exhibition on 27 March. The French 'Halal Normes' standard and label will provide a guarantee the product meets halal rules. The scheme could act as a model for the UK and rest of the EU to follow.
France's halal market is worth €3bn a year but the category remains embryonic in the UK.
