Sainsbury has recruited Stephen Nelson as trading director. He will take up his post in July.
Nelson will oversee all aspects of the supermarket chain's trading functions, leading and co-ordinating five key departments. In addition to fresh and convenient food, ambient food, drink and general merchandise, he will also be responsible for quality, innovation and procurement.
He is currently president (North America) South West for Diageo and has worked for the global drinks giant since 1996. He has held several other senior posts at the company, including commercial director and then managing director of Guinness Great Britain. The role will be Nelson's second period working for Sainsbury. Between 1991 and 1996, he held posts that ranged from pork buyer to senior manager for beers, spirits and soft drinks.
Sainsbury's managing director Stuart Mitchell held the post of trading director in May 2000 and continued to handle the role when he became assistant md, alongside Sara Weller in August 2001. But when he became MD in January, the multiple decided it needed a dedicated trading director.
Weller became deputy md at the same time and retains that post.
Mitchell said: "I'm delighted Stephen is coming back to Sainsbury and bringing with him a wealth of broad trading experience within drink, food and home electronics markets."
