Nestlé has completed its $5.5bn (£2.78bn) acquisition of US baby food brand Gerber from Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis.

Nestlé agreed to acquire the business in April this year and had been linked to the brand for a number of months prior to the deal.

“This is a major step in Nestlé's transformation into a nutrition, health and wellness company,” said Peter Brabeck-Letmathe, chairman and CEO of Nestlé. “The acquisition transforms Nestlé Nutrition into a business approaching CHF10bn (£4.1bn) in sales with an enhanced critical mass and access to the group's global R&D network to drive innovation.”
