Nestlé is among a raft of manufacturers criticised in the US for using misleading or unsubstantiated claims on food labels.

The US Food & Drug Administration said suppliers including the Kit Kat maker and American seafood giant Gorton’s were not justified in describing some products as healthy or low-fat.

Claims made on baby foods have come under particular scrutiny, the Financial Times reported, as no dietary guidance exists for children under two.

The companies involved have 15 days to respond to the warnings.
