Dalton Philips takes up the reins at the helm of Morrisons today.

The 41-year-old was appointed chief executive officer in January.

He replaces Marc Bolland, who is set to join Marks & Spencer’s as CEO in May.

The appointment of Philips –a relative unknown who joins from Canadian retailer Loblaw – initially shocked the City but has since been welcomed by analysts.

He will be hoping to build on the record results posted by Morrisons earlier this month, with turnover up 6% to £15.4bn and pre-tax profits up from £655m to £858m for the year to 31 January.
