Asda is to launch a Best of Wales range of 70 food and drink and 50 non-food lines, sourced from 20 new Welsh suppliers, into all stores on May 12. The range will join 100 other Welsh products sold throughout the year, plus Welsh seasonal lines.
Best of Wales is the next phase in the multiple's local sourcing programme set up in 2001. It follows Asda's commitment to introduce local lines in all its 258 UK stores by 2004 and the appointment of stores in the community director Clive West to handle local sourcing. Asda already sells locally sourced Best of ... lines from Cornwall, the West Country, the Lake District and Scotland.
Local sourcing manager Karen Todd said: "Retailers should take local products seriously there is a £160m business opportunity each year."
