Food to go is a key feature of the third Waitrose Food & Home hypermarket which opened for business yesterday.

The 80,000 sq ft store in LondonÂ’s Canary Wharf office development is split over three floors, with food contained in the 40,000 sq ft basement area.

Key innovations include a salad and juice bar, sushi bar, wine bar and a steak and oyster bar, as well as an 80-cover café ¡rea. The food area also offers the full Waitrose food assortment plus food-related general merchandise such as pans, glasses and crockery.

Waitrose promised that many of the innovations at Canary Wharf would be rolled out to other stores in its estate.

A full range from the John Lewis department stores is offered on the two remaining floors.

Mark Price, Waitrose director of selling and marketing, said: “Only the John Lewis Partnership is able to offer the full spectrum of retail formats from town centre food shop to shopping centre department store. And only Food & Home bridges the two, offering a genuine one-stop approach.”

A full report on the new store will be published in this weekÂ’s issue of The Grocer Â- out on Saturday.
