The federation agreed last week to appoint a chief executive following the departure of general manager Paul Chambers and said it hoped to fill the new position by the summer.
"A CEO will help us build on the NFRN's achievements and shape the next stage of our development," said national president Parminder Singh.
"They will work to ensure the federation continues to provide a unique, developing package of support for our independent news and convenience retailer members and maintain our role."
Chambers's departure was officially announced last month, although it is understood he left the NFRN in November. He had been at the helm for four years and left "to take up a position closer to his home town of Peterborough".
