Sainsbury is working on the first wave of a new range of non-food products to be launched in stores at the end of the year.

Speaking at its store managers’ conference, Sainsbury non-foods trading director Keith Evans said 2003 would be critical for growing the non-food business.

“We are building a new non-food range based on our food credentials and it will significantly add to the average basket in our stores,” said Evans.

He said it would turn Sainsbury into a destination for non-food, and dedicated training would be given to staff.

Last November, group chief executive Sir Peter Davis said JS’s non-food offering would focus on home and cookshop, clothing and children’s.
