US Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has personally written to Sir Terry Leahy asking him and Tesco to become partners with US union UFCW and local community groups. This follows UCFW's Two Faces of Tesco campaign in the UK earlier this month, which compared how Tesco operates in Britain to its US operation Fresh & Easy.

"I am aware of Tesco's reputation in Britain as a partner to unions. I would hope you would bring those values to your work in America," said Obama.

The call came as Tesco claimed it had received more than 10,000 job applications to work at Fresh & Easy after announcing it would be hiring 750 new employees .More than 13 applications have been received for each position .
