Tesco’s planned £54m acquisition of the Adminstore c-store group is not to be referred to the Competition Commission, according to the Office of Fair Trading.

The OFT said that “on the information currently available to it” it would not refer
the merger to the CC under the provisions of the Enterprise Act 2002.

Opponents to Tesco’s acquisition of the 45 stores from Adminstore have said that the deal should be blocked because of Tesco’s overall share of the grocery market.

But Tesco replied by saying it only has a 6% share of the c-store market, way short of the 25% that usually triggers OFT scrutiny and that the 45 stores had a turnover of less than £70m.

The deal secures Tesco 15 Europa Foods stores, 11 Cullens, eight Harts the Grocer, three Crispins and eight other London stores.
