Michael Owen has been drafted in by Asda as an 11th-hour sub for the injured Wayne Rooney.

Rooney had been scheduled to appear in football-themed TV ads for the retailer, which began airing this week, but his demanding recovery schedule - he broke his foot in a Premiership match in April and has been working hard to get fit for the World Cup - meant he was unavailable.

An Asda spokesman said: "Wayne rang Michael and asked if he could help out, and he was delighted to."

He added; "We worked with Michael during Euro 2004, so we know each other very well."
