from Michael Schuck, CEO, Action Against Business Crime, BRC

Sir; Asda and Unwins are doing good work to manage incidents of violence in the workplace (Protection for staff, The Grocer, August 21, p8).
The British Retail Consortium, with retail sponsors and USDAW, has produced a training and video programme that enables staff and trainers to work through scenarios that lead to aggression and learn how to handle less tolerant customers.
The BRC’s retail crime survey, published later this month, will again highlight the linked issues of theft, violence and drug abuse, which retailers cannot combat alone. Action Against Business Crime, a partnership venture between the BRC and the Home Office, will ensure business crime partnerships play
a full part in local community crime prevention. Retailers are working with the Home Office and the DTI to develop a national strategy to manage key crime issues. In this way we can ensure the shopping experience is not marred by violence.
