The petrol price war between the multiples intensified yesterday after Asda announced its fifth price cut in as many weeks.

The supermarket group said that from today the price of unleaded petrol at its 167 petrol stations across the UK would fall 1p to 84.9p. The price of diesel would fall 2p to 89.9p.

Tesco said that it would cut unleaded petrol by 2p and diesel by 1p but there would still be regional variations in price, while Sainsbury's cut the price of unleaded petrol at all of its petrol stations to 85.9p.
