Anheuser-Busch InBev has pulled the plug on its historic Stag Brewery in Mortlake as the brewing giant seeks to lower costs in the wake of last year’s landmark merger.

Around 180 jobs are set to go at the brewery, which is slated to close by 2010 – bringing an end to more than 250 years of brewing at the site.

The brewery currently produces beers including Budweiser, Bud Ice and Michelob.

The news comes as the merged company continues with a consultation to identify savings following the $52bn tie-up between Anheuser-Busch and InBev last year.

“This consultation is also a response to challenging market conditions and significantly higher costs imposed as a result of record rises in beer taxation, which mean that we need to review and propose any changes now,” the company said in a statement.
